Are you hoping to find the job of your dreams, but don’t know where to start? Do you want to find a better job without having to study again? Then continue reading, because these 10 steps will lead you to realise your career potential:
1) Know yourself
The first stage is knowing what you want in a job and what is most important to you. Would you choose to work in a team or individually? Do you prefer to be responsible for one select part of a project or do you prefer to be at the helm? Would you rather use your creativity and choose your responsibilities or would you prefer to have specific concrete tasks? Once you are able to answer these questions, you have already learned a lot about yourself.
2) Ask your friends
Your friends often know you better than you know yourself, so ask them about your strengths and weaknesses. Be receptive to constructive criticism and though some comments may surprise you, their viewpoints are invaluable.
3) Be self-confident
Only once you believe in yourself can employers truly believe in you. It is crucial to exude self-confidence, a lot of which comes from knowing yourself (see steps 1 and 2).
4) Don’t be desperate
A career is an important aspect of most people’s lives and it is important that the employer knows you are driven. However, it is important not to come across as if you are desperate to find a job. You should be knowledgeable and passionate about the position at hand, not just desperate for any job. If you are relaxed and self-confident, the company will be more likely to choose you over a seemingly desperate candidate.
5) Know the job that you are looking for
Even if you do not know what exactly you want as a job, you should know which jobs you certainly do not want and have an idea of a career plan. Narrow down you search by excluding certain jobs and you will find an interest in certain areas develops. Try to find a job that is also your passion.
6) Keep your focus
Even if your dream job seems difficult to find, keep searching for something in a similar area, and career progressions will likely appear. Look toward the future and keep long-term goals at the forefront of your mind. If you end up doing something entirely different, it will only get harder to change back onto your ideal path to your dream job. Perhaps you still need to try some jobs before you know what you really want, but once you discover this, it is only a matter of remaining on the same route to find the same kind of jobs.
7) Go for it!
Did you find an application you love, or a company that has an ethos you respect? Do not hesitate and go for it. Try to come across as your very best self on your application letter and clearly explain why you are the perfect person for the job. Make it personal, honest and eye-catching. Even if you do not have much experience in the sector, your enthusiasm can make the difference.
8) Understand that there is more to life than your job
Do not put your entire life on hold just to get the perfect job. Bosses look for rounded people who are down-to-earth and passionate. Your job is an important part of your life, but make sure that you still have time to pursue what your love, and see friends and family.
9) Do not expect your current boss or company to change
If you have a job that is not making you happy, or a boss that does not understand your mindset, it is time to look for something else.
10) Be honest
Be honest both with yourself and with others around you. People respect honesty, so ask for what it is that you really want. Sometimes it can be frightening to ask what you really want because you may fear the reaction. However, if you never try, there will not be any reaction at all.
